Quit4Life, the Hampshire NHS stop smoking service, are here to offer specialist support for people who want to stop smoking. You’re four times more likely to quit with our help than on your own!

Quit4Life run one-to-one appointment sessions locally to you throughout the week. We also offer telephone support for those who are unable to attend appointments.

Our advisers will be able to offer you free, friendly support and advice, and discuss with you the available medications. We can supply Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), or put in a prescription request via your GP for stop smoking medications (such as Champix). Alternatively we can supply a vaping starter kit voucher if you’d like to stop smoking by switching to an e-cigarette. These options can be supplied free of charge if you don’t pay for your prescriptions, or for a one-off prescription charge if you do.

Your weekly contact with our specialist advisers will help you to plan your quit date, learn to cope with managing cravings and provide essential support if you have questions or queries.

Smoking is still one of the biggest causes of death and illness in the UK. None of us know who will be affected next - it’s a gamble. We all know someone who lived to 90 and smoked but what about the people who did not?

It is well known that cigarette smokers are at a higher risk than non-smokers of developing a number of chronic health disorders, including several types of cancer and pulmonary (lung) disease. Smoking also contributes to coronary artery disease, which in turn can cause heart attacks and stroke. In fact, smoking approximately doubles the risk of stroke.

Stopping smoking for just a week, or even a day or more, before having surgery can reduce the risk of breathing problems and can help a patient recover more quickly and get home sooner.

Passive smoking from tobacco can present significant harm to those around you, including other adults, children and pets. Unfortunately smoke clings to clothes and furnishings, so you can never completely eliminate the risk of smoking until you stop.

Smoking in pregnancy

Stopping smoking when you are pregnant or trying to conceive is one of the best things you can do to give your child a healthy start in life. Smoking whilst pregnant harms your baby. Gases, such as carbon monoxide, are some of the 4,000 chemicals found in cigarette smoke which can pass through to your baby, restricting the supply of essential oxygen. Quitting smoking completely can reduce the risk to your unborn child.

  • 20 minutes: Your blood pressure and pulse rate should return to normal
  • 8 hours: Oxygen levels in your blood should return to normal
