We recommend that women concerned about the safety of their PIP breast implants should contact their GP or implanting surgeon / clinic. Further advice has been issued by the Department of Health and joint statements of the Association of Breast Surgery www.associationofbreastsurgery.org.uk, Royal College of Surgeons and British Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons.
Any women with PIP implants who have new breast symptoms, such as a new lump, inflammation or a change in the shape of the breast, should be seen by their GP and referred to the breast service for urgent assessment in the usual way. In line with current Department of Health guidance, at present there is no recommendation for routine removal of PIP breast implants.
