Ambulatory care is an innovative way of providing a safe, patient-focussed, flexible, same day emergency service for appropriate patients. The service aims to prevent unnecessary hospital admission and provide a better patient experience.
Our Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) offers easy access to early diagnostic tests, specialist staff, and review by a hospital consultant in one place. It is not a pathway or condition-led service that ensures all patients can be considered. All patients must be referred and clinically accepted by the ACU team.
Patients are referred from:
- Emergency Department
- Wards (as part of support network to facilitate early discharge)
ACU is located in the Emergency Department next to the short stay ward at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital.
On arrival patients are booked in and seated in the waiting area. The patient has an initial assessment with a nurse and medical doctor, suitable investigations are arranged and reviewed with the medical consultant and appropriate treatment is then started. Our aim is to work towards safe and appropriate discharge home. If however, admission to hospital is required, the ACU team will arrange a bed in the Acute Admission Unit or the most appropriate medical ward.
If patients are concerned once they return home, we advise them to contact the ACU directly during office hours (9am to 5pm Monday to Friday) on 01256 473202 ext 43017 Outside of these hours, patients should contact their local out of hours GP service.
